“Esperanza”, the tenth album of the Munich band G.Rag y los Hermanos Patchekos, released 24th November on Gutfeeling Records.
Esperanza, the hope, is green. The cover of the now tenth album is also hopeful: the cover child Xaver plays the superhero and sticks his tongue out at us. The kids are always right anyway. We should all listen to them. Then there will be a hopeful future. Esperanza.
Recorded again in their own studio/rehearsal room “Herrliches Warngau” by band leader G.Rag himself and mixed with the help of Nico Sierig (Joashino), G.Rag y los Hermanos Patchekos go their way and, like Xaver, care little about the rest of the world.
What remains is the inimitable mixture of Southamercan and Mesoamerican popular music, of folk, jazz, country, punk and whatever else is picked up along the way. Cultural admiration and respect for the roots are the band’s top maxim. It’s a sad and beautiful world.
The band digs up its own roots with OK Cumbia, a piece originally by the band Inpalumbia. It shook up the Munich HC scene in the early 90s with its mix of punk, prog and pop. And yes, four musicians of the band now play with G.Rag y los Hermanos Patchekos. And yes, because of Inpalumbia there are gutfeeling records. The Patcheko version starts with a fanfare (Three trumpets + baritone sax), then swings up to drunken cumbia and confirms: Everything is OK!
Speaking of “Before.” Life in Distance returns once again to the punk roots (and to the damn pandemic). A short stomper with zydeco accordion and surf guitar, which immediately turns into Distance Dub. As a psychedelic barrio jam with dub elements.
And because the own label turned 30 this year, another root excavation: Gut Feeling, the eponymous song by Devo is lifted into the Patcheko universe with scrappy guitar and sharp horns. Oh, what’s that? The original’s punky suffix Slap your Mammy, Slap your Daddy wears the classic Latin silk suit here.
Marc’s boogaloo takes the tempo out. Nu Yorica wakes up, the band still playing. Stoned, drunk. The stream of consciousness of their Brazilian cuica player won’t let them stop. Ever.
Esperanza. Hope as a piece of music somewhere between Bohemian 2Step and Rocksteady plus relentlessly primitive surf guitar. Anyone who knows a genre pigeonhole for this, please let me know.
Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit are strolling through Munich in the summer of 1970. They wear bell-bottoms and colorful shirts. They are looking for Damo Suzuki. The bourgeois threaten to beat them up, more and more bums follow them. Trinchera, the Krautrock homage of the Patchekos, resounds loudly from some apartment in Schwabing.
And we stay briefly in 1970, because that’s when the British singer-songwriter Bill Fay published the song Be not so Fearful, an appeal to overcome one’s own fear. The fear you can hear singer DJErnesto in the case also. Fear of failing at this epochal song. But with the help of The Black Rider, he catches on. And it doesn’t hurt that the Patchekos play this classic as a mambo. Yes, mental health is an issue.
Cumbia Yerba is a hit. A slow dragging cumbia in the Patcheko style with strumming banjo, chirping guiro and flat accordion. Brass fanfares and a duet with G.Rag and cuica king Willy Fuiza. It’s all about marijuna and kitchen cabinets. Classic absurd G.Rag lyrics. Love it.
Preparing for the album’s final chord is the Rock’n’Röll Dub, With psych guitars, clanging steel drum and looping clarinet, the jam flows into one of the Patchekos’ favorite songs, So you wanna be a Rock’n’Roll Star, originally by The Byrds, offers a lot that meets open Patcheko ears. It is, according to G.Rag, a “Westcoast surf classic, the trumpet is played by Hugh Masekela and the Byrds sing the best anyway”. Very successful! The Patchekos never wanted to be Rock’n’Roll stars. But if they still will be, that’s OK too!

The group was formed in late 1999, influenced by the DIY ethos of 90s punk and hardcore bands, but looking for something new and unheard. This evolved into a lo-fi orchestra with its own unique sound between swing, cumbia, folk, Latin and punk.
In the meantime they have released ten studio albums on their own label Gutfeeling Records, the last one will be released in November 2023. And once they also did film music, namely for the series München 7 (nominated for the Grimme Award).
The real machine of Hermanos Patchekos is an unwavering rhythm section of four percussionists and a double bass. The whole thing rattles very southern. Add to that the Patcheko horns (three trumpets + baritone sax/clarinet), three guitars, an accordion, a crooner and three singers.

Esperanza, die Hoffnung, ist grün. Auch das Cover des mittlerweile zehnten Albums ist hoffnungsvoll: Das Coverkind Xaver macht den Superhelden und streckt uns die Zunge raus. Die Kinder haben eh immer recht. Wir sollten alle auf sie hören. Dann wird das auch was mit einer hoffnungsvollen Zukunft. Esperanza.
Wieder im eigenen Studio/Übungsraum “Herrliches Warngau” von Band-Chef G.Rag selbst aufgenommen und mit Hilfe von Nico Sierig (Joashino) abgemischt, gehen G.Rag y los Hermanos Patchekos ihren Weg und kümmern sich, wie Xaver, wenig um den Rest der Welt.
Es bleibt die unverkennbare Mischung aus süd- und mesoamerikanischer Populärmusik, aus Folk, Jazz, Country, Punk und was halt so am Wegesrand aufgeklaubt wird. Kulturelle Bewunderung und Respekt für die Wurzeln sind dabei oberste Maxime der Band. It’s a sad and beautiful world.

Wo wir schon mal bei “Früher” sind: Life in Distance kehrt noch mal zu den Punk-Roots zurück (und zur vermaledeiten Pandemie). Ein kurzer Stomper mit Zydeco-Akkordeon und Surfgitarre, der sogleich in den Distance Dub übergeht. Als psychedelic Barrio-Jam mit Dub-Elementen.
Und weil das eigene Label heuer 30 geworden ist, gleich nochmal Wurzelausgrabung: Gutfeeling, der namensgebende Song von Devo wird mit Schrammelgitarre und scharfen Bläsern ins Patcheko-Universum gehoben. Die Angst hört man Sänger DJErnesto in dem Fall auch an. Angst, an diesem epochalen Song zu scheitern. Aber mit der Hilfe von The Black Rider fängt er sich an. Cumbia Yerba ist ein Hit. Schleppender Cumbia im Patcheko Style mit klimperndem Banjo, zirpendem Guiro und flächigem Akkordeon. Bläserfanfaren und ein Duett mit G.Rag und Cuica-King Willy Fuiza. Es geht um Marijuna und Küchenschränke. Klassisch absurde G.Rag-Lyrics. Love it.
Die Vorbereitung auf den Schlussakkord des Albums bildet der Rock’n’Röll Dub, Mit Psycho-Gitarren, klirrender Steeldrum und loopender Klarinette fließt der Jam in eines der Lieblingslieder der Patchekos: So you wanna be a Rock’n’Roll Star, im Original von The Byrds, bietet einiges, was auf offene Patcheko-Ohren trifft. Es ist, laut G.Rag, ein “Westcoast Surf Klassiker, die Trompete spielt Hugh Masekela und die Byrds singen sowieso am schönsten”. Sehr gelungen! Dabei wollten die Patchekos nie Rock’n’Roll Stars sein. Aber wenn Sie’s noch werden, auch OK!

Die Gruppe gründete sich Ende 1999, durchaus geprägt vom DIY-Ethos der 90er-Jahre-Punk und-Hardcore-Bands, aber auf der Suche nach etwas neuem, ungehörten. Daraus entwickelte sich dann ein Lo-Fi Orchester mit ganz eigenem Sound zwischen Swing, Cumbia, Folk, Latin und Punk.
Mittlerweile haben sie zehn Studio-Alben auf ihrem eigenen Label Gutfeeling Records veröffentlicht, das letzte erscheint im November 2023. Und einmal haben sie auch Filmmusik gemacht, nämlich für die Serie München 7 (nominiert für den Grimme Preis).
Die eigentliche Maschine der Hermanos Patchekos besteht aus einer unerschütterlichen Rhythmus-Gruppe aus vier Percussionisten und einem Kontrabass. Das Ganze scheppert sehr südlich. Dazu kommen die Patcheko-Horns (drei Trompeten + Bariton Saxophon/Klarinette), drei Gitarren, ein Akkordeon, ein Crooner und drei Sänger.
