OCTO is an instrumental noise rock trio from Cologne. Since its formation in 2011, the band has become an integral part of the North Rhine-Westphalian underground and the German noise rock scene.
Two basses and drums form a deliberately minimalist setup that has been designed from the outset for directness, dynamism, and physical presence. Vocals and classical guitar parts play no role. OCTO are Tobias Göbel (bass, illustrations), Guido Karnstedt (drums), and Felix Arnoldt (bass, synths).
Until 2019, the band worked with a strictly defined, dry sound. The sound was tightly controlled, designed for live performances and without any sonic deviations. This phase is documented on the releases Octo (2013) and Kitsch (2017). After Torben Feck left in 2019 and the band subsequently worked as a duo, they prepared for a return to a trio line-up.
In 2024, OCTO returned with a new lineup, moving away from their dry, brittle sound and evolving into the powerful force that the band is today. The roles of the two bass guitars are clearly defined but not fixed. Rhythmic complexity, formal shifts, and varying tonal densities coexist on equal footing, clearly setting OCTO apart from more conventional noise rock bands. This opening is documented on the album “Idyll,” which will be released in 2026 on the Cologne label Mörtel Sounds.

+++German Info:OCTO ist ein instrumentales Noise-Rock-Trio aus Köln. Seit der Gründung 2011 ist die Band aus dem nordrhein-westfälischen Underground und der deutschen Noise-Rock-Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken.
Zwei Bässe und Schlagzeug bilden ein bewusst reduziertes Setup, das von Beginn an auf Direktheit, Dynamik und physische Präsenz ausgelegt ist. Gesang und klassische Gitarrenparts spielen keine Rolle. OCTO sind Tobias Göbel (Bass, Illustrationen), Guido Karnstedt (Drums) und Felix Arnoldt (Bass, Synths).
Bis 2019 arbeitete die Band mit einem strikt gesetzten, trockenen Klangbild. Der Sound war eng geführt, live gedacht und ohne klangliche Ausweichbewegungen. Diese Phase ist auf den Veröffentlichungen Octo (2013) und Kitsch (2017) dokumentiert. Nach dem Ausstieg von Torben Feck 2019 und der anschließenden Arbeit als Duo bereitete sich die Band auf die Rückkehr zur Trio-Besetzung vor.
2024 kehrte OCTO in der neuen Formation zurück, löst sich etwas von dem trockenen, spröden Sound und entwickelt sich zu dem wuchtigen Ungetüm, das die Band heute ist. Die Rollen der beiden Bassgitarren sind klar definiert, aber nicht fixiert. Rhythmische Komplexität, formale Verschiebungen und unterschiedliche klangliche Dichten stehen gleichberechtigt nebeneinander und heben OCTO von konventionelleren Noise-Rock-Bands deutlich ab. Diese Öffnung ist auf dem Album „Idyll“ dokumentiert und erscheint 2026 auf dem Kölner Label Mörtel Sounds.
