PHANTOM WINTER: Five years after their last longplayer „Into Dark Science“ (2018), southern German doom/sludge/darkness monsters announce a new album! “Her Cold Materials” will be released on October 27, 2023 via This Charming Man Records. „Her Cold Materials“ (named after Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” novel cycle, in which a teenager must find herself and save her world) is a coming-of-age folk horror tale of a teenage woman.
When instrumental Doom act OMEGA MASSIF announced its break-up, members Andreas Schmittfull and Christof Rath reformed under the name PHANTOM WINTER. The aim was to create extreme music. They called the style “Winterdoom”.
Melancholy meets cold and anger. The drumming is brutal and staccato-like, reminding on machines and monstrosities. Lots of noise, lots of anger, lots of Doom, Post and even Black Metal elements, apocalyptic scenarios set to music, dense atmosphere, subtle guitar melodies, a bit of drone, sometimes compact and sometimes epic. PHANTOM WINTER weave all these components lovingly and serve the whole outcome on top level with ornaments next to loads of dirt.
Their live performances are always intense and angry, visitors like to compare them to church services.

Das 4. Album „Her Cold Materials“ (der Name wurde vom Romanzyklus „His Dark Materials“ von Philip Pullman, in dem eine Teenagerin zu sich selbst finden und ihre Welt retten muss, abgeleitet) ist eine Coming-of-Age-Folk-Horror-Tale einer heranwachsenden Frau.
Andreas Schmittfull und Christof Rath gründeten PHANTOM WINTER 2014 in Würzburg, nach eigenen Angaben als Nebenprojekt zu Omega Massif. Der Impuls zur Bandgründung sei von Rath gekommen, nachdem der Schreibprozess neuer Musik mit Omega Massif „nicht mehr so richtig funktioniert“ habe. Die ursprünglich als Zwei-Personen-Gruppe geplante Band wuchs zügig zu einer größeren Band-Konstellation an.
PHANTOM WINTER bezeichnen ihren Stil als Winterdoom. Rezensenten verweisen auf Post-Metal, Sludge und Post-Black-Metal, sowie auf Interpreten dieser Stilrichtungen als Referenz. Für das Songwriting, die Texte, Arrangements und Samples ist Schmittfull alleinverantwortlich. Die Musik ist geprägt von einem schweren, als schleifend bezeichneten Riffing, das dem des Sludge nahe steht, einem als „maschinell-kalt in Szene“ gesetzt bezeichnetem Schlagzeugspiel und melancholisch-melodiösen Leads.
