The new album GEGENWART by shatten Out Now (6 March 2026) Through Misitunes.
In her novel The Employees, Olga Ravn asks the question: ‘How to stay soft in a hard world?’ – And this very question could be the theme of shatten’s new album: How do you stay soft in a hard world?
‘Stand in the way of things. Learn to contradict language.’ This is how shatten express their unease about a world with increasingly hardened fronts and escalating conflicts in their song Chinaschilf. A time in which the climate crisis is noticeably intruding into people’s lives and everyday routines.
A time in which male egos are reducing the world to rubble and ashes, and conversations about humanity and social needs seem like a parody of past dreams. In view of this, shatten are searching for a new language, for softness in the midst of a harsh world. The lyrics revolve around questions of resistance, as in Chinaschilf or Raben. Introspective observations such as in Apokalypse and diffuse fears such as in Paranoia or Der Gast stand out just as much as the naive desire for a new beginning, for example in Cowboy or in Wuppertal.
shatten take their time, breaking away from their punk roots in places and opening themselves up to a freer, more playful version of themselves. The album puts you in a good mood, while remaining exciting and varied. The vocals are mostly delicate and clear, only at decisive moments do they become direct and aggressive. The instrumentation also seems more playful and less stoic than on the previous albums.
And even though shatten’s origins in the Hamburg indie rock scene are evident, American indie rock bands such as The National, Modest Mouse and Built to Spill are more likely to be cited as references. In German-speaking countries, their sound is reminiscent of bands such as Erregung öffentlicher Erregung, International Music and Die Nerven.
