The song “Sturmschaden” by the post-punk group shatten is about catastrophes. It interweaves the importance of the parental home and the place of birth as decisive factors that shape destiny even before the first breath is taken. The text, inspired by the experiences of the flood disaster in the Ahrtal, links personal stories with collective tragedies.

The group is called shatten and their new record is called “Gruppenchat”. After the release of a limited-edition tape with cover versions of the widely too unknown Kiel punk band Totschick, “Gruppenchat” is the follow-up to their self-titled debut, which struck a nerve in spring 2021 with its lively conceptuality and a radical live character and received consistently positive reviews in the music press. “Shatten’s debut is the perfect album at the moment: euphoric, devastating and uplifting all at once,” wrote Visions.
“Gruppenchat” has become a morbid get-together. On 6 songs, shatten bring all their brute energy and jacket-pocket lyricism to bear to outline a cosmos all their own. Like with the resting pulse of a squirrel, they cross milieus that are connected above all by the fact that in them the supposed offside seems to move into the centre of the world.
Where, at the beginning, the idyll turns out to be largely densely pooped (holiday), a little later, motel fantasies are indulgently lived out (A Car with Open Doors), to finally talk about the end of the city as a manifesto of patriarchy (Modern Work).
The production is as usual rough, sometimes boisterous, but never uncharitable. But above all, shatten succeed in pressing the beguiling energy of their live concerts onto vinyl with “Gruppenchat”.

+++ German Info: Das Lied “Sturmschaden” der Post-Punk-Gruppe shatten handelt von Katastrophen. Es verwebt die Bedeutung des Elternhauses und des Geburtsorts als entscheidende Faktoren, die das Schicksal prägen, noch ehe der erste Atemzug getan wird. Der Text, inspiriert von den Erlebnissen der Flutkatastrophe im Ahrtal, verknüpft persönliche Geschichten mit kollektiven Tragödien.
Die Gruppe heißt shatten und ihre neue Platte trägt den Namen „Gruppenchat“. Nach der Veröffentlichung eines limitierten Tapes mit Coverversionen der weithin viel zu unbekannten Kieler Punkband Totschick, erscheint nun mit „Gruppenchat“ der Nachfolger ihres selbstbetitelten Debüts, das im Frühjahr 2021 mit seiner lebhaften Konzepthaftigkeit und einem radikalen Livecharakter einen Nerv traf und in der Musikpresse durchweg positiv besprochen wurde. „Shattens Debüt ist das perfekte Album zur Zeit: euphorisierend, niederschmetternd und aufrichten zugleich“, schrieb die Visions.
„Gruppenchat“ ist ein morbides Get-together geworden. Auf 6 Songs bringen shatten all ihre brachiale Energie und ihre Jackentaschen-Lyrik zum Einsatz, um einen ganz eigenen Kosmos zu umreißen. Wie mit dem Ruhepuls eines Eichhörnchens durchkreuzen sie Milieus, die vor allem adurch verbunden sind, dass in ihnen das vermeintliche Abseits in den Mittelpunkt der Welt zu rücken scheint.
Wo sich zu Beginn das Idyll als weithin dichtgekackt entpuppt (Urlaub),
werden wenig später Motel-Phantasien schwelgerisch ausgelebt (Ein Auto mit offenen Türen), um schließlich über das Ende der Stadt als Manifest des Patriarchats zu sprechen (Moderne Arbeit).
Die Produktion ist gewohnt rau, manchmal ungestüm, aber nie lieblos. Vor allem aber gelingt es shatten mit „Gruppenchat“ die betörende Energie ihrer Livekonzerte auf Vinyl zu pressen.
